Theme & Topics

A day of drawing, painting, information, and discussion in a natural landscape; we'll be joined by noted landscape artist, Karl Eric Leitzel, as well as several other experienced plein air artists including members of the Farmland Preservation Artists of Central Pennsylvania:

• Welcome and overview of sites on the farm (John & Catherine Smith, James Lesher)
• Demonstration of plein air techniques (Karl Leitzel and, perhaps, others)
• Scatter for morning work, possibly landscapes or perspectives (Group)
• Lunch-time discussion and reflection (Group, see below)
• Scatter for afternoon work, possibly close-up work (Group)
• Final gathering to discuss day and show work (Group)

Topics for lunch-time discussion include:

• Working with natural light
• Using different drawing and painting media for plein air work
• Selecting a scene or subject: 
  challenges and opportunities provided by wetlands
• Developing a sense of place

Who Should Come

• Artists experienced in working in the field
• Artists without experience working in the field but wanting to learn and/or give it a try
• Hobbyists who like to draw or paint who would like a day working outside

• Free, but registration is required
• Limited to 15 participants
• Bring a bag lunch,
  drinks and snacks provided
• Bring drawing and/or painting materials
• Rain or shine
• Start time: 8:00 AM (to catch the light)
